In these dog days of summer, it not seem like deer hunting season is just around the corner. But it will be here before we know it, so it’s time to get ready.
Outdoor Life recently listed seven good tips for getting ready this summer. They center on taking the time to learn your hunting spots intimately, first by studying maps and apps, and then by hiking around the property and finding places where you can study different areas with your binoculars.
Then, technology comes into play. Trail cams – set up in places like food and water sources – are invaluable, and doing some fake scrapes near your setup spots can increase the chance that bucks will visit.
Then, put all your plans together, by working to spot and follow bucks that you will want to pursue once the season begins, learning their habits before it’s time to hunt. And finally, have patience when the season begins, knowing that patience and tenacity are all-important.
In fact, the story recounts how a hunter bagged a buck 51 days after he had first spotted his target back in the previous July. He knew the buck’s primary lair, and knew when to be in his stand and be ready.
Preparation is the key to success, and NOW is the time to start.
