Investors find their way into the woods
With the volatility of the stock market, many investors are finding their way into the woods for alternative investment options. And as part of this trend, more institutional investors are looking at timberland, says a recent story in IPE Real Estate magazine.
As one example, the story describes how the State Investment Council of New Mexico, which previously had more than 80 percent of its assets in publicly traded stocks and equity-like real estate, has moved into a wider mix of investments, including energy, infrastructure and timber to reduce its risk exposure and improve annual returns.
“The growth in the timberland market reflects underlying demand for wood and forest products around the world,” the story says. “Despite the country’s economic slowdown, China is the major driver of international trade in forest products,” ranking as the world’s largest importer.
